Cigar smoking is a popular pastime among many adults, and women are no exception. But what is the average age of women cigar smokers? To answer this question, researchers conducted a study to examine the demographic characteristics, tobacco consumption patterns, purchasing behaviors, and reasons for consumption among current cigar smokers. The study included a total of 14,657 participants, with 3426 who had never used tobacco, 3276 exclusive cigarette smokers, and 176 exclusive cigar users. The results showed that the average age of women cigar smokers was between 41.2% and 47.1%, with adults living below the federal poverty level representing 34.2% of cigarette smokers and between 41.2% and 47.1% of all cigar smokers.
The regression analysis included 834 pure only smokers and 1061 double cigarette + cigarette smokers after excluding observations that were missing information for ≥1 covariate. More than half of tobacco smokers overall (52.4%), including 56.2% who also smoked cigarettes today and 61.0% who smoked cigarettes before, indicated that cigars were like smoking a normal cigarette, compared to only 6.3% and 26.8% of other types of cigarettes. Compared to whites, black cigar smokers (APR %3D 0.82, 95% CI %3D: 0.72—0.9) were less likely to also smoke cigarettes. Participants who had once heard of the type of cigarette, who had once smoked it “quite regularly” and who now smoked that type every day or a few days defined themselves as established cigar smokers today. Not only is the fresh leaf aged before being rolled into a cigar, but in most cases a freshly finished cigar is sent to an aging room where the cigars come together and the moisture levels of the cigar can be stabilized. The most important limitation of this study is the lack of information on the types of tobacco smoked, the number, frequency and duration of use among current smokers, and the number of years since they stopped smoking (among former smokers). In conclusion, the average age of women cigar smokers is between 41.2% and 47.1%, with adults living below the federal poverty level representing 34.2% of cigarette smokers and between 41.2% and 47.1% of all cigar smokers.
